Hi,

Does anyone using Glyco know about the formats that it is prescribed in? I have been made aware of differing formats that will alter the way the medication needs to be used.

Are solutions provided in Postive, Negative or Neutral formats and how are they used to prevent repelling the medication or systemic effects?

Do you place solution in one tray only? i.e positively charged solution in tray with negative electrode or..
negatively charged solution in tray with positive electrode..or
Neutrally charged in both trays?

If there are solutions with differing electrostatic properties, are these indicated on the medication?

Thanks,

Scott

Dear scott,
Glyco is neither positive or negative formatted, it is neutral, so you should have the same effects under the positive and negative electrode sides.

Basics: you use direct current to push meds with Iontophoresis into the skin/joints, whatever).

For this a +- change in the middle (reversation of Iontophoresis polarity) is nonsense, but can be done if wished.

You put these neutral solutions in both negative and positive trays to save treatment time - if you place it only in one tray you have to do a polarity switch - placing such a solution only on one side only makes sense when the patient sweats only on one side.

Placing is like this
Positive solutions: under the + electrode.
Negative solutions: under the - electrode.
Neutral solutions: under the +/- or both electrodes.

If the solutions have different electrostatic properties, they are normally indicated on the medication. You may also ask the manufacturer, or you will find it out by trial and error when placing them in both trays without a polarity change in the middle of the treatment: with no change after several treatment in a row, it becomes clear very quickly what kind of nature the solution is. You will simply lose the effects of the meds on one side if there is a formatation.

If you don`t lose the effect, the solution is neutrally formatted.
If you lose the effect on the - electrode side the solution is + formatted and
if you loose the effect on the + electrode side the solution is - formatted.

If you put a - solution in a tray with a + pole, nothing will happen, the med will not be delivered into the skin via the iontophoresis current.

As these solutions are dissolved in a "vehicle" like water or cream ,electrostatic properties are insignificant because these are mostly only under 1% saturated solutions (the % rate you need should be controlled by your Doctor - and is also found by trial and error).

The longer you are in the trays, the deeper the medications are pushed into the skin.
As Hyperhidrosis sufferers only sweat in the upper and lower skin levels it is a good idea to keep the treatment times rather short (2-5 min.) in order to avoid systemic side effects.
Also there is the question of how strong the current is, stronger current: more "push".
However, to have a "supercomfort" (remember you use hard direct current) -treatments are normally performed with low currents under 5mA.

Generally, there are 4 factors that have an impact on med Iontophoresis:
% of med in the vehicle,
also what kind the vehicle it is (water, cream, gel, alkohol etc.) the current strength and the treatment times.

Current strength and treatment time are indicators of how deep the medication is pushed in.

% and vehicle base indicate how much of the med is pushed in.

The more meds and the deeper you push them into the body - the more it is possible that you may have harder or stonger side effects than are experienced from the meds when you admister orally.

If the treatment is setup right and personally controlled by a doctor (and this will also be trial and error- beginning with low% solutions and low treatment times and current) you'll have a better chance of avoiding or significantly reducing the impact and /or side effects of the med on the rest of the body (liver etc.).
